From Mrs. Mary J. (Hansler) James:
"Hans Hansel came to America from Grand
Duchy Hesse Cassel in 1756 with two sons Bejamin
and John. While on the sea George was born.
They settled in New Jersey where four more children
were born. Jacob. David, Christina and Hannah.
His son Benjamin went to Ohio where he married
and had three children. Frank, Elsie, and John.
Elsie and Frank went on the stage and while in
Portugal, Elsie became the Morganatic wife of Don
Fernandos (a Prince). Hans' son John settled in Virginia.
His grandson John was state senator for Virginia
    and prominent in the War for the South;
George, Jacob, Christina and David came to Canada
1786 and 1787 and settled between St. Catharines
and Welland not far from Niagara Falls."

From Miss Matilda Mettler - and her niece Eliza (Marcille) Brecker.
Mary Rosina Hensel came to America with her parents,
possibly John and Mary Hensel, and one younger brother Andrew
from Meissen, Saxony, Germany. A brother, George, was
born on the ocean, AD 1755. They went to New Jersey
then to Charleston, S. Carolina, & returned to New Jersey.
Mary Rosina married Phillip Mettler (1747) in N.J. or Penna.
Their son George was born Oct 5th 1782 and baptized Nov 24th 1782.
Andrew Hensel and his wife were sponsors. This copied from
church records of Zion Church, New Germantown (now Oldwick)
in New Jersey, Hunterdon County. John George Mettler with six
other children were brought to this church from Spruce
Run, to be baptized, a little creek, running from
Schoaley Mountins to Lebanon about six miles long.
In 1787 several families came from N. Jersey to Canada West
with the Mettlers ?? Hensels, Hoaners, Lampmans, Coucks,
Seburns. Mary Rosina had four or six brothers, one went to
Springfield Ohio and one to Massachusetts, Mary being
the only daughter. Andrew Hensel married Mary
Flack at Zion Church, New Jersey.

Andrew Hansel came from New Jersey, 1786. His brother
George Hansel came one year later. He was a tanner
from Hackettstown, N.J. and seeing a fine place to erect
a tannery on Atkins Creek, decided to settle here. His
wife & daughter Anna did not come from N. Jersey. It is
said that a divorce was obtained. In a few years he
married Rosanna Slaugh one of a family of nine
sisters and two brothers & there were four children
Julia Ann, Barbara, Andrew and Hannah. In after
years his daughter came from N. Jersey being a widow.

The name of this branch of the family became changed to Hansler.

the latter running through St. John.

    St. Anns Cemetery:-

    George Hansel. Jan 27/1789 - July 20/1824.

"My flesh shall slumber in the ground
Till the last joyful trumphet sound
Then burst the chains with sweet surprise
And in my Saviour's image rise"
(See Niagara Historical Society Records in Hamilton Library)

This inscription was on the marble stone, since
broken & buried beneath the sod on the remains of Daivd & Sarah Hansel
who were moved from Mingle Hill and St. Ann's in 1933.
On November 1933, Frank and Albion Hansel
had the remains of their parents David and
Sarah Hansel along with the two monuments moved
from the deserted neglected Mingle Hill Churchyard to
St Ann's beside the graves of George & Sarah Hansel,
and the dates of the lives of the latter placed on
the reverse side of the stones of David & Sarah Hansel.
The original headstones of George Hansel is placed
in the grave over the remains of David & Sarah Hansel.
It was broken in two pieces. See the inscription

    St Ann's, Oct 3/1933:
Mrs. Charity Heaslip gives me this data to find the dates of
my grand mother Sarah Hansel's birth & death.
She was 52 years old when she died (Susan H. was 17 when
    she married John Mingle)

    From Byron Waters. Oct 23/1933
His mother Eliza Mingle Waters died at 58 in 1892.
She was nine years old when her mother died. She died
when Byron Waters was 37 years old. (Byron was born in
1853). His mother was born in 1834.
From this we find that Sarah (Wilkinson) Hansel's
    date of birth & death are 1791 & 1843.
    1834 + 9 = 1843 1843 - 52 = 1791

In blacksmith & wagon shop at St Anns, George Hansel
was the woodworker & Jess Ransier was the blacksmith.
    - Robson & Geo Hansel owned the sawmill & flour mill.

By the old law of prima geniture by which the oldest son
inherited all the estate, John Hansel inherited 400 acres of
land, sawmill & gristmill, distilling & blacksmith shop
at St. Anns & the rest of the family received nothing.
    David H. a brother b. 1818 - d 1886, went to live with his
uncle John Mingle east of St Anns. Their mother
Sarah Wilkinson Hansel, the mother of seven children,
married Wm. Mingle the father of seven children & there
was one daughter Eliza Mingle who married Henry Waters.
Wm. Mingles son John had married Susan Wilkinson
so there was a father & a son married to
two sisters. John Hansel went to Ohio about 1835, after losing all the estate. Heard from
in 1837. Had enlisted & was joining an expedition against some Indian
outbreak in Texas or Florida, no further word. In a few years Margaret (Hansel) Hidden
married John Smake (?). Frank Road (?), died in 1896 - aged 86 years.
