City directories are primarily useful for locating people in a particular place and time. They can tell you generally where an ancestor lived and give an exact location for census years. They are also useful for linkage with sources other than censuses.
There are usually several parts to a city directory. The section of most interest to the genealogist, of course, is the alphabetical listing of names, for it is there that you may find your ancestor.
Whenever you use a directory, however, it is important to refer to the page showing abbreviations used in the alphabetical section of the directory, usually following the name in each entry. Some abbreviations are quite common, such as h for home or r, indicating residence. There may even be a subtle distinction between r for residents who are related to the homeowner and b for boarders who are not related.
Some city directories list adult children who lived with their parents but were working or going to school. Look for persons of the same surname residing at the same address. If analyzed and interpreted properly, these annual directories can tell you (by implication) which children belong to which household, when they married and started families of their own, and when they established themselves in business. In cases where specific occupation is given, you can search records pertinent to that occupation.
Once an ancestor has been found in a city directory, there are several ways the information can be used to gain access to, or link with, such sources as censuses, death and probate records, church records, naturalization records, and land records.

Description:
This database is an index to individuals enumerated in the 1890 special census of Civil War Union veterans and widows of veterans available on microfilm M123 (118 rolls) from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Although this schedule was to be used to enumerate Union veterans, in some areas, Confederate veterans were listed as well.
The 1890 veterans schedules provided spaces for the following information: names of surviving soldiers, sailors, and marines, and widows; rank; name of regiment or vessel; date of enlistment; date of discharge, length of service; post office address; disability incurred; and remarks. Although all of this information is available on the census schedules themselves, information listed in this index includes the veteran's name or widow's name, rank, year of enlistment, and year of discharge.
Veterans schedules are often used as a partial substitute for the 1890 federal census, which was destroyed by fire. While fragments of the 1890 census may exist in state and local repositories, they are often difficult to track down and are incomplete. Although they do not list everyone who was included in the 1890 census, the veterans schedules are a partial head of household list for those who were old enough to have served in the Union military during the Civil War.
Veterans schedules can be used to verify military service and to identify the specific military unit in which a person served. A search of the state where an individual lived in 1890 may yield enough identifying information to follow up in service and pension records at the National Archives; it can often trace Civil War veterans to their places of origin.
Some of the above information was taken from Chapter 5: Research in Census Records by Loretto Dennis Szucs; edited by Loretto Dennis Szucs and Sandra Hargreaves Luebking (Salt Lake City, UT: Ancestry Incorporated, 1997).

Senior Medical Officer of St. Elizabeth Hospital There
Specialist in Psychiatry
WASHINGTON, July 2, 1935 – Dr. William M. Kenna, senior medical officer of St. Elizabeth Hospital, maintained for the care of mentally disturbed soldiers, died here yesterday of a heart attack. He was found dead in his office soon after he had completed visiting the wards.
A funeral service will be held tomorrow morning in the Roman Catholic Church at Fort Myer and burial with military honors will take place in Arlington National Cemetery.
Dr. Kenna, a native of New Haven, Connecticut, was graduated from the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale in 1890 and from the Yale Medical School in 1892. After hospital service in New York, he became a specialist in nervous disorders in New Haven. When, in 1897, Company C, Second Regiment, Connecticut National Guard, was organized, Dr. Kenna became First Lieutenant, serving three years. During the World War, he was attached to Camp Sheridan, Ninth Division, Montgomery, Alabama, with the rank of Captain with the Medical Corps, specializing in psychiatry. After being honorably discharged the commanding officer gave him the rating on his discharge certificate as “a highly efficient officer of the highest type.” He then became attached to the medical staff at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
His first wife was Miss Jane Dillon of New Haven, who died in 1907. In 1919 he married Bertha Graves of New Haven who survives. He also leaves a sister, Elizabeth Kenna of the Secretary of State office, Hartford, and a brother, Frank Kenna of New Haven. KENNA, WILLIAM M
