Notes from Susan B.: Antonia appears as Emily Gager in the 1880 Census at 462 9th Avenue in Manhattan. The corresponding New York City Directory entries with this same address confirm this is Antonia. She is described as a 30 year old widow from Baden, working as housekeeper for Jacob Conrad and family.
Antonia was actually 37, but it is likely another person in the building gave the information. Jacob does not work because he has a broken back. His two daughters work in a silk factory. Three other families live in the building. One man owns a bakery and also has a servant, there is a painter and family and a Peter Arnold and family who is an upholsterer. Perhaps Antonia obtained this position from a business associate of her late husband. This building was located near the corner of 9th Avenue and 36th Street, near today's Lincoln Tunnel. However Antonia's children William and Emily are not mentioned as living at this address. At age 11 and 10 - did they go to stay with Geiger relatives? The New York city directory 1880 to
1882 lists "Geiger, Antonia, wid. Christian" at this address. | Zeiser, Antoinette (I54)
